Jolla Unveils Sailfish OS: New Mobile Ecosystem Launching in Africa
## Jolla’s Expansion into the African Market
Jolla has recently unveiled plans to establish a Sailfish OS ecosystem in Africa, with South Africa as its starting point. This initiative follows their earlier ambitions to create a similar mobile ecosystem in Russia.
### Launched in Partnership
The company is collaborating with local entrepreneur Dr. Sello Rathete, a co-founder of South Africa’s Cell-C, to form the Sailfish Africa consortium. Their aim is to enhance the mobile ecosystem not only in South Africa, but also across other African nations.
Dr. Antti Saarnio, the Chairman of Jolla’s Board, emphasized the importance of developing an independent mobile ecosystem for Africa. He stated, “We are now taking practical steps forward to create the Sailfish Africa ecosystem together with local powerhouses from e-commerce, digital media, and mobile. Africa deserves to have its own independent mobile ecosystem, avoiding the digital colonization that comes with relying solely on one operating system.”
### Perspectives from Local Leaders
Dr. Rathete added, “Having followed Jolla and Sailfish OS for quite some time, I’ve realized that it stands as the sole viable alternative for building an independent mobile ecosystem. The growth of mobile commerce is crucial for African economies; thus, developing original solutions in e-commerce, mobile banking, and e-learning is essential. Sailfish OS provides that opportunity for Africa.”
Jolla intends to empower major internet players in Africa with a Sailfish OS-based platform. This initiative aims to unify services and develop regional solutions that cater to the unique needs of BRICS nations, ensuring local integration is both practical and advantageous.
Dr. Saarnio also mentioned ongoing projects similar to this one in India and Russia, highlighting a broader vision for mobile ecosystems across various regions.
Isn’t it exciting to see innovative technology solutions tailor-made for local markets in Africa? What are your thoughts on this initiative?
