Airtel Faces Challenges in India, But African Operations Thrive

Bharti Airtel’s Q1 Financial Overview

Bharti Airtel reported a significant decline in its Q1 profits, primarily due to ongoing pricing pressures in the Indian mobile sector. The leading telecommunications provider experienced an 11% contraction in its mobile business, even as its Digital Business and TV units showed resilience.

Total revenue from operations in India and Sri Lanka fell by 13.3%, reaching ₹150.3 billion (approximately $2.2 billion).

CEO Insights on Industry Challenges

Gopal Vittal, the Managing Director and CEO for Airtel India and South Asia, commented, “The current pricing trends in the industry are not sustainable. Nevertheless, with our effective bundles, strategic content partnerships, and handset upgrade initiatives, our mobile data traffic has surged by 355% year-on-year. After most market consolidation, we remain enthusiastic about the opportunities in the Indian telecom market and are dedicated to providing top-notch services to our customers.”

Acquisition and Growth Strategies

During the first quarter, Airtel completed the acquisition of Telenor’s Indian unit, integrating it into its existing operations in relevant telecom circles. This move also enabled Airtel to enhance its spectrum holdings.

In contrast, Airtel’s African operations performed well, with revenue growth of 13.9%, spurred by increased data usage and a rise in the average value of Airtel Money transactions. This figure was adjusted for currency impacts, resulting in an official revenue increase of 8.9% to ₹52.8 billion.

Global Financial Performance

Globally, Airtel’s net profit dipped by ₹3.7 billion, bringing the total to ₹973 million. Despite a pre-tax loss of ₹2.85 billion, write-backs of approximately ₹18.44 billion allowed the company to report a profit for Q1. Revenue across the group decreased by 9%, falling from ₹219.58 billion to ₹200.8 billion.

Subscriber Growth Statistics

By the end of Q1, Airtel boasted 438 million mobile subscribers, marking a 20.8% increase. Of this number, 344.6 million subscribers were in India, with 28 million acquired through the Telenor acquisition.
