Airtel Targets South African Market with Strategic Acquisition Plans

Expansion Plans for Bharti Airtel in Africa

Bharti Airtel is reportedly eyeing a potential acquisition of a smaller telecommunications operator in South Africa. The contenders for this opportunity are either Cell C or 8ta, which would significantly enhance Airtel’s presence across the African continent. Currently, Airtel operates in 17 African countries and expanded its reach by acquiring Zain’s African operations two years ago.

Airtel’s Historical Ventures in South Africa

This wouldn’t mark Airtel’s inaugural attempt in the South African market. Back in 2009, the company made a bid to purchase MTN but faced challenges, reportedly due to governmental regulations that hindered the deal.

About 8ta and Cell C

8ta is a brand owned by Telkom South Africa, the primary fixed-line operator in the region. While Telkom has mentioned that there has been no indication from Airtel regarding an interest in acquiring 8ta, the operator is in its early stages. This makes Airtel’s financial strength a potentially beneficial match.

On the other hand, Cell C boasts about 9.3 million subscribers, positioning it as the third-largest operator in the country. Consequently, acquiring Cell C would likely require a more substantial investment from Airtel.

As Bharti Airtel explores these options, the future of telecommunications in South Africa may witness significant shifts. What do you think about Airtel’s possible expansion?
