ArcelorMittal Receives $398 Million Bid for South African Units

ArcelorMittal, a prominent global steelmaker, has encountered complications in its negotiations to sell its South African unit to the state-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). According to Bloomberg News, these discussions have hit a snag primarily due to disagreements over the unit’s valuation.

### Valuation Disputes

Although there is still a chance for an agreement to be reached before the due diligence deadline on September 30, reported differences indicate that ArcelorMittal is seeking significantly more than what has been proposed. Reports suggest that offers may have climbed as high as 7 billion rand, roughly $398.6 million.

### Response from Involved Parties

As of now, neither ArcelorMittal, its South African branch, nor the IDC have provided comments regarding the situation. Similarly, Reuters has not been able to confirm the details of the report at this time.

### Strategic Options

In a statement issued to the Johannesburg stock exchange, ArcelorMittal South Africa indicated it has been exploring a range of strategic options while the IDC continues its due diligence efforts. The South African government is also reportedly pursuing structural interventions to address ongoing issues.

### Recent Developments

Back in July, ArcelorMittal expressed that discussions with the South African government had not yielded substantial progress in preventing the closure of its underperforming long steel operations within the region. The situation took a turn in March when the IDC intervened with an injection of 1.683 billion rand, temporarily postponing closure plans.

### Stakeholdings in Focus

It’s noteworthy that the IDC holds an 8.2% stake in ArcelorMittal South Africa, making it the second largest shareholder after ArcelorMittal itself, based on data compiled by LSEG.

With the September 30 deadline looming, the future of ArcelorMittal’s South African operations remains uncertain. What do you think might be the next steps for the companies involved?
