BRICS Nations Collaborate to Counter Trump’s Aggressive Tactics

Kim Heller|Published

The Rise of BRICS

BRICS is emerging as a significant global player. This coalition of countries has a substantial presence across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, collectively contributing over 45% to the global GDP.

Highlights from the 17th BRICS Summit

The recent 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro highlighted the bloc’s potential and consistent growth. The Rio Declaration, agreed upon at the summit, outlines a vision aimed at creating a more equitable global economic framework.

The summit depicted BRICS as a poised contender for a global economic revival. Despite facing internal economic and ideological discrepancies, a sense of confidence and strategic alignment dominated the discussions more than ever before.

Voices of Leadership

Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, articulated BRICS’ vision of an alternative global organization from an economic standpoint. He emphasized, “The world has changed. We don’t want an emperor.”

Echoing this sentiment, Russian President Vladimir Putin participated remotely, noting, “Everything indicates that the model of liberal globalization is becoming obsolete. Business activity is shifting towards emerging markets.”

Challenges in the Global Economic Landscape

Currently, the architecture of the global financial system is largely structured to benefit the Global North. The World Bank reported that, while the Global South made up 40% of global trade in 2024, it faced significantly higher average tariffs than developed economies.

The United States and the European Union maintain control over key financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank, while G7 nations set the global economic agenda. The BRICS summit focused on mitigating the reliance on the U.S. dollar, promoting local currencies, and enhancing trade and investment.

Investment Initiatives

One significant development is a $10 billion investment platform through the New Development Bank. This aims to stimulate trade and infrastructure development within and among BRICS countries. Multilateral guarantees are set to lower financing costs, enhancing economic participation.

The summit also reiterated the necessity for developed nations to meet climate change commitments. China and the UAE pledged support for Brazil’s “Tropical Forests Forever” initiative, while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described BRICS as a platform for independent economic collaboration free from geopolitical pressure.

Political Backlash

However, U.S. President Donald Trump quickly responded by threatening countries aligning with BRICS’ “anti-American policies” with a 10% tariff increase. He accused BRICS of attempting to undermine the U.S. dollar, prompting several leaders within BRICS to criticize such tactics.

Mao Ning from the Chinese Foreign Ministry remarked that the arbitrary tariff increases do not serve anyone’s interest, asserting that the dollar’s dominance constitutes a “geopolitical chokehold.” Ramaphosa countered Trump’s remarks, stating that there should be acknowledgment of the emergence of diverse global power centers, which should be viewed positively.

A New Economic Order?

Donald Trump clings to the idea that the dollar should remain the gold standard. Nevertheless, a new economic paradigm is in the making, as shared by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasized BRICS’ commitment to fostering fair growth.

He stated, “The Global South isn’t begging for fairness; it’s demanding it. The bias in the economic order is outdated, and BRICS is prepared to redefine the rules.”

The Road Ahead for BRICS

Transforming power dynamics is essential for BRICS, particularly as dependence on the U.S. dollar perpetuates economic disparities. Although the bloc currently faces significant challenges, such as heavy reliance on U.S. markets, the transition towards de-dollarization remains an aspirational goal.

For now, the U.S. dollar reigns supreme, but BRICS shows signs of gradual progress. Russia, for instance, has successfully engaged in dollar-free trade with its BRICS partners, and China is piloting BRICS Pay, albeit on a limited scale.

Future Prospects

However, the quest for a shared BRICS currency and a SWIFT alternative remains a distant objective. The path toward de-dollarization and revamping the global economic framework is likely to be a slow process, with varied progress across member states.

While Trump’s aggressive stance may eventually lose efficacy, BRICS must focus on sustaining unity among its diverse members, striving toward a vision where the Global South takes a leading role in global economic matters.
