Cassava Technologies Raises $310 Million in Funding Led by Google and Others
## Cassava Technologies Achieves Key Milestones
CASSAVA Technologies, a distinguished technology leader rooted in Africa, has announced three pivotal milestones: a significant equity funding, the successful refinancing of its South African rand debt, and the completion of its legal restructuring.
These well-timed initiatives set the stage for Cassava’s impressive growth, backed by a strong financial foundation.
### Equity Investment Round
Recently, Cassava secured a remarkable $90 million in an equity investment round. This funding round saw participation from esteemed entities including the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation (Finnfund), and Google LLC.
This financial boost plays a crucial role in enhancing Cassava’s balance sheet, promoting sustainable profitability, and solidifying its status as a leading global tech entity with African roots.
### Business Reorganisation
The conclusion of the equity round aligns with Cassava’s successful business restructuring, aimed at creating a comprehensive digital solutions platform. This platform encompasses various services such as Broadband Connectivity, Co-location (data centers), Cloud, Cybersecurity, Compute (AI), and Payment solutions across over 30 markets in regions including Africa, the Middle East, India, and Latin America.
### Debt Refinancing Success
In addition to the equity fundraising, Liquid Intelligent Technologies—a subsidiary of Cassava—has entered into new agreements to refinance its South African Rand term loans. This multi-tenor refinancing totals approximately $220 million and involves partner institutions like Standard Bank of South Africa, Rand Merchant Bank, Nedbank, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
### Leadership Thoughts
Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Group CEO of Cassava, expressed enthusiasm about these substantial accomplishments. “These developments significantly bolster our financial standing and exemplify the vision of our founder and Group chairman, Strive Masiyiwa, alongside the unwavering commitment of our teams throughout the Group,” he remarked.
He further noted, “The completion of our equity round, combined with the rand debt refinancing and reorganisation, signifies more than just financial growth. It marks a critical turning point that we believe will unlock tremendous value and propel our digital infrastructure expansion to bridge the digital divide across the continent.”
### Strong Shareholder Base
With the recent involvement of DFC, Google LLC, and Finnfund, Cassava boasts a robust group of shareholders, including Econet Group, British International Investment (BII), Public Investment Corporation (PIC), Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), and Africa-Export Import Bank (Afreximbank/FEDA).
### Diverse Portfolio of Services
Cassava Technologies has developed a formidable suite of business units, including Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa Data Centres, Liquid C2, Cassava.ai, and Sasai Fintech. Each of these units excels in their industries, enabling Cassava to work towards its vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no one behind in Africa.
