## Feature Phones and Smartphone Adoption in Africa
Despite the rising demand for smartphones in Africa last year, feature phones still maintain a significant presence, representing 52% of the market share. Smartphones have become integral to many African lives, offering services for finance, productivity, and entertainment. However, these devices remain a luxury for many, creating a barrier to widespread adoption.
### The Financial Barrier
Affordability is a significant hurdle for individuals considering a smartphone. Average wages compel consumers to think critically before making substantial financial commitments. While smartphones are increasingly being adopted, the price remains a concern. By the end of 2023, Canalys noted that 68.7 million smartphones were shipped, marking a 6% annual growth.
In the second quarter of 2024, shipments totaled 17.8 million, maintaining the same growth rate despite various economic challenges. Notably, smartphones priced under US$100 made up 33% of the shipments during that quarter.
Canalys analyst Manish Pravinkumar emphasized the stark contrast in pricing between feature phones and smartphones, with feature phones costing around US$20 compared to approx. US$100 for smartphones. He remarked, “Affordability is a key factor in why smartphones are not sold to consumers.”
### Economic Challenges
Yang Wang, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, commented on the economic shifts following the pandemic, including inflation and currency declines that have affected affordability. Despite these challenges, smartphone shipments have increased modestly over the last quarter, with the average selling price reaching US$201—up from US$179 in 2023.
“Consumers are keen to upgrade to feature-rich devices,” Wang stated, acknowledging the heightened interest in accessing essential services through smartphones.
### Changing Price Dynamics
Wang indicated that manufacturers recognize the demand for more affordable, yet technologically advanced devices. While brands like Transsion dominate the market, companies like Xiaomi and Oppo are making inroads with better value propositions. He highlighted a significant surge in component prices, compelling vendors to focus on more premium devices to ensure profitability.
Pravinkumar noted, “That lower price band is definitely being abandoned by vendors, but it’s the vendors giving up, not the consumers.”
### Import Issues
High import tariffs and a lack of local manufacturing exacerbate the issue. Pravinkumar explained, “Africa is largely reliant on imports; for instance, 99% of smartphones in Nigeria are imported.” This reliance drains government resources and currency reserves.
The cost of data remains another crucial factor in smartphone adoption. Pravinkumar suggested that lowering data prices could significantly enhance smartphone penetration rates, as the combined expenses for devices and data bundles remain prohibitive.
### The Future of Smartphone Technology
Amidst these challenges, the telecom industry is actively seeking innovative solutions. Qualcomm’s recent unveiling of the Snapdragon 4s (Gen 2) processor promises to deliver premium smartphone features to developing markets. Manufacturers like Xiaomi are looking to deploy this tech in their upcoming devices, further democratizing access to improved connectivity.
Wang mentioned that as demand for advanced smartphones grows, the transition from 3G to 4G/5G is already apparent. With component prices for 3G devices aligning with 4G, manufacturers are focusing on introducing 5G technology at competitive prices.
### Local Manufacturing as a Solution
Local production could alleviate some financial burdens by eliminating import tariffs and passing savings to consumers. Pravinkumar noted pockets of nascent local manufacturing in sub-Saharan Africa but argued that it lacks the scale seen in countries like India and Vietnam.
“Support from African governments could be pivotal in getting affordable handsets into consumer hands,” he suggested.

Mature financing models could facilitate smartphone adoption, as seen in India. However, the complexity of operating across 52 diverse African nations presents a unique set of challenges.
Ultimately, as more Africans embrace the digital landscape, meeting their demand for advanced smartphones and services could unlock numerous societal benefits. A collaborative approach involving governments, operators, and manufacturers may hold the key to securing a better digital future for the continent.
