Recent Developments at Telefónica Indicated by CEO Resignation

The recent resignation of José Maria Álvarez-Pallete from his role as Chairman and CEO of Telefónica has led to ongoing industry discussions. Following this announcement, it’s been confirmed that he will also step down as the Chair of the GSMA Board of Directors.

According to the GSMA, “By virtue of this resignation, he is no longer able to continue in the position of the Chair of the GSMA.” Álvarez-Pallete had been leading Telefónica since April 2016.

The GSMA expressed gratitude for his contributions both to the organization and to the mobile network sector as a whole, stating, “The GSMA is grateful for his contribution to the organization and to the industry overall.”

Transition and New Leadership

With Álvarez-Pallete’s departure, Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel Group and the GSMA’s Deputy Chair, will take on the role of Acting Chair. He will serve until a new chair is elected after the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Additionally, Marc Murtra, the newly appointed Chairman and CEO of Telefónica, will represent the company on the GSMA Board immediately.

Vittal, a prominent figure in the telecommunications landscape, represents the second-largest operator in India and plays a significant role in South Asia and Africa’s markets. He has been a vital member of the GSMA Board since the 2019-2020 term, recently being re-elected as Deputy Chairman.

The GSMA now unites more than 1,000 mobile operators and organizations globally, including 26 board members comprising representatives from global giants and smaller independent players.

At a board meeting held on January 18, Telefónica announced that Álvarez-Pallete’s contract would be terminated to align with the company’s “new shareholding structure” and the desires of new stakeholders for a “new stage” in leadership.
