Gujarat Gas in South Africa

Gujarat Gas Explores Expansion into South African Market Amidst Industry Shifts

Johannesburg, South Africa – October 11, 2025

Gujarat Gas, India’s leading natural gas distribution company, is reportedly evaluating opportunities to enter the South African market. This strategic move comes at a time when the South African energy sector is undergoing significant transformations, including regulatory challenges and shifts in foreign investment.

Industry Dynamics and Regulatory Challenges

In July 2023, South Africa’s Competition Commission initiated legal proceedings against Sasol Gas, the nation’s sole supplier of natural piped gas, for allegedly inflating prices by up to 72% over nearly a decade. This action underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing and transparency within the energy sector. (allafrica.com)

Further complicating the landscape, in September 2025, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved a 4% increase in Sasol Gas’s maximum gas price, translating to a 20% rise over the year. This decision has raised concerns among industrial users about the potential impact on operational costs and competitiveness. (iol.co.za)

Foreign Investment and Market Opportunities

The South African energy sector has experienced notable shifts in foreign investment. In July 2024, TotalEnergies, a French energy giant, withdrew from two offshore gas fields, citing economic challenges in developing and monetizing these discoveries for the South African market. (iol.co.za)

In response to such developments, the South African government has expressed a commitment to enhancing support for foreign energy firms. Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa emphasized the need for effective collaboration to fully utilize the country’s hydrocarbon reserves, aiming to attract and retain international investment. Potential for Gujarat Gas’s Entry

Gujarat Gas’s interest in the South African market aligns with the country’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources and infrastructure. The government’s proactive stance in addressing regulatory challenges and fostering a conducive environment for foreign investment presents a promising landscape for Gujarat Gas to consider expansion.

As the South African energy sector continues to evolve, the potential entry of Gujarat Gas could contribute to the diversification and stabilization of the market, benefiting both consumers and the broader economy.
