Hero Future Energies Expands Renewable Energy Footprint in South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa – September 17, 2025

Hero Future Energies (HFE), the renewable energy arm of India’s Hero Group, has announced plans to establish a significant presence in South Africa’s burgeoning renewable energy sector. The company aims to develop a 200 MW solar power plant in the Northern Cape region, marking its first major investment on the African continent.

Strategic Investment and Project Details

The proposed solar facility is expected to generate approximately 350,000 to 375,000 tons of carbon dioxide savings annually, aligning with South Africa’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. HFE’s entry into the South African market is part of its broader strategy to diversify its global portfolio and contribute to sustainable energy solutions worldwide.

Partnerships and Financial Backing

To support this venture, HFE has secured strategic partnerships with local energy firms and received financial backing from international investors, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC). These collaborations are set to facilitate the project’s development and ensure its alignment with South Africa’s energy policies and environmental goals.

HFE’s Global Expansion and Commitment to Sustainability

This move into South Africa follows HFE’s recent announcement of a $20 billion investment plan over the next six years, aiming to increase its renewable energy capacity from 1.9 GW to 30 GW by 2030. The company has also been actively involved in other international projects, including a 100 MW solar power plant in Southeast Asia and a 200 MW solar project in Karnataka, India, developed in collaboration with Rayzon Solar.

HFE’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by its adherence to stringent global safety standards and corporate governance norms. The company is dedicated to being a Net Zero organization by 2030 and achieving water positivity by 2026. (herofutureenergies.com)

Implications for South Africa’s Renewable Energy Sector

HFE’s entry into the South African market is expected to bolster the country’s renewable energy capacity and contribute to its efforts in meeting international climate commitments. The project is anticipated to create job opportunities, stimulate local economies, and promote the adoption of clean energy technologies.

As HFE continues to expand its global footprint, its initiatives in South Africa underscore the growing importance of international collaboration in achieving sustainable energy goals and combating climate change.
