Bilateral Investment Treaty Discussions

India and Israel are poised to finalize a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) during Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s upcoming visit. This treaty aims to enhance economic collaboration between the two nations and is part of a broader plan for a free trade agreement (FTA) to stimulate trade growth.

Key Meetings Scheduled

Mr. Smotrich’s visit from September 8 to 10 will include discussions with various Indian officials, such as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The itinerary also features stops in Mumbai and the GIFT City in Gandhinagar.

Goals of the Visit

The primary goal of this visit is to strengthen the economic and financial relationship between Israel and India through important bilateral discussions. It is expected that the finance ministers will sign the BIT, providing essential protections for investors from both countries.

Benefits of the Bilateral Investment Treaty

The BIT will help enhance investor confidence by ensuring a minimum standard of treatment and non-discrimination. It will also create an independent arbitration forum for resolving disputes. Since 2000, Israel has established BITs with over 15 countries, including the UAE and Japan.

Encouraging Economic Cooperation

This treaty exemplifies the commitment of both nations to foster economic cooperation, leading to a stronger investment environment. It is anticipated to open doors for increased bilateral investments, benefiting businesses in both countries.

Background on Recent Visits

This trip marks the fourth visit by an Israeli minister to India this year, following visits by several other ministers, including those from tourism, economy, and agriculture sectors.

Ongoing Trade Relations

India and Israel maintain a strategic partnership, with bilateral trade nearing $4 billion per year. Cumulative ODI from India to Israel has reached $443 million, while Israel’s direct FDI into India is approximately $334.2 million over a similar timeframe.

Joint Initiatives and Global Collaboration

Both nations are active members of international organizations such as the World Bank and can collaborate on Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) projects, especially in developing countries.

What are your thoughts on the potential impact of the bilateral investment treaty between India and Israel?
