How does India compare to South Africa in Global Diplomacy ?

Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited 49 countries over the past three years, India ranks 12th in in the world in the Global Diplomacy Index.

According to the index released by an international policy thinktank Lowy Institute, India has total 172 representative offices around the globe.

With 119 embassies or high commissions, 47 consulate generals, three permanent missions and three other representations in 119 countries, India ranks 11th among G20 countries.

According to Ministry of External Affairs data, India hosts diplomatic missions of 154 countries.

Among BRICS countries, India is above South Africa which has 124 diplomatic posts across the world. China, Russia and Brazil rank second, third and seventh respectively.

The United States stamps its diplomatic power by topping the chart with 271 diplomatic missions across the world. France and China follow it with 267 and 258 posts respectively.

United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, Japan and Spain are the rest of countries which makes into the top ten.

The index ranks 41 nations, mainly members of G20 and OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The index identifies close to 6000 diplomatic posts in around 660 cities.
