India Leads US Immigrant Billionaires: 125 Foreign-Born Tycoons Control 18% Wealth

India has now become the largest source of billionaires in the immigrant community in the United States, as highlighted by the Forbes 2025 List of America’s Richest Immigrants. This significant change indicates a growing impact of Indian entrepreneurs on the U.S. economy, surpassing their Israeli counterparts.

India Ranks First with 12 Billionaires

According to Forbes, there are currently 125 foreign-born billionaires in the United States. This group constitutes 14% of all American billionaires, collectively amassing a wealth of $1.3 trillion, representing 18% of the nation’s billionaire wealth. India leads with 12 billionaire immigrants, followed closely by Israel and Taiwan, each with 11.

This rise not only emphasizes the growth in numbers but reflects a wider trend in which highly educated Indian professionals excel in industries such as technology, finance, and healthcare.

Notable Indian-Origin Billionaires

Leading this group is Jay Chaudhry, the founder of cybersecurity firm Zscaler, with a net worth of $17.9 billion. Chaudhry’s journey from a small village in Himachal Pradesh to establishing a tech empire exemplifies the classic immigrant success narrative in America.

Other prominent figures include Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a notable venture capitalist, as well as tech leaders like Sundar Pichai of Alphabet and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, who have recently joined the billionaire ranks.

The following is a list of some key Indian-origin billionaires:

  • Jay Chaudhry – $17.9B (Cybersecurity)
  • Vinod Khosla – $9.2B (Venture Capital)
  • Rakesh Gangwal – $6.6B (Aviation)
  • Romesh T Wadhwani – $5.0B (Software)
  • Rajiv Jain – $4.8B (Finance)
  • Kavitark Ram Shriram – $3.0B (Google, Venture Capital)
  • Raj Sardana – $2.0B (Technology Services)
  • David Paul – $1.5B (Medical Devices)

  • Sundar Pichai – $1.1B (Alphabet)
  • Satya Nadella – $1.1B (Microsoft)
  • Neerja Sethi – $1.0B (IT Consulting)

Interestingly, three of the ten richest individuals in the U.S. are foreign-born: Elon Musk (with a net worth of $393.1 billion), Sergey Brin ($139.7 billion), and Jensen Huang ($137.9 billion).

Moreover, Taiwan’s representation among billionaire immigrants has surged almost threefold since 2022, placing it on equal footing with Israel, just after India.

The Forbes report highlights a compelling trend regarding immigrant wealth, with a striking 93% of immigrant billionaires having built their fortunes from the ground up, often in sectors like technology and finance.

What are your thoughts on the evolving landscape of immigrant entrepreneurship in the U.S.?
