India’s Role as a Sourcing Hub
India is positioning itself as a favored sourcing hub thanks to competitive labor costs and a stable policy environment. The recently finalized India-U.K. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has granted a 12% duty advantage over rivals like China, according to Mathew Cyriac, Chairman of Gokaldas Exports, an apparel manufacturer based in Bengaluru.
Growth Projections in the Global Apparel Market
The global apparel sector is seeing significant changes, with exports anticipated to grow from $575 billion in 2025 to $715 billion by 2030. Cyriac highlighted this trend in the company’s annual report, emphasizing India’s emerging potential in the global apparel market.
Challenges and Opportunities for Gokaldas Exports
While there are immediate challenges such as U.S. tariff uncertainties affecting consumer sentiment, Gokaldas Exports is agile enough to capitalize on long-term opportunities. “This dynamic environment bolsters our ambition to solidify our global leadership position, leveraging India’s growing significance in apparel exports, which rose by 10% in FY25,” Cyriac stated.
Financial Performance and Strategic Acquisitions
In FY25, Gokaldas Exports experienced substantial revenue growth fueled by both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. The acquisition of Atraco enhances their manufacturing capabilities in Kenya and Ethiopia, while also providing access to new markets with favorable trade agreements.
Additionally, the purchase of Gurgaon-based Matrix Design has fortified the company’s offerings, particularly in knitwear, catering to markets in North America, Europe, and South Africa.
Significant Revenue Gains
Sivaramakrishnan Ganapathi, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, noted that Gokaldas Exports saw a 63% year-on-year increase in consolidated total income, reaching ₹3,917 crore. “Our organic revenue growth of 19% YoY surpassed industry averages, and acquisitions contributed significantly, accounting for 34% of total revenue,” he shared.
Investments in Growth and Sustainability
The company has invested heavily in capabilities and manufacturing enhancements. In FY25, they upskilled over 51,000 employees, and achieved 40% water savings in laundry operations, reducing water intensity by 8% per garment.
Looking Ahead
Looking towards FY26, Cyriac expressed optimism about navigating immediate uncertainties like tariff challenges, while taking advantage of India’s potential as an essential global sourcing hub. Ongoing negotiations for FTAs with the EU and USA, along with India’s steady geopolitical landscape, are expected to further bolster their competitive position.
