Indian Runner Celebrates Achievement in His 13th Comrades Marathon

Satish Gujaran’s Journey to the Comrades Marathon
As excitement builds around the upcoming Comrades Marathon, renowned for its grueling nature, Indian runner Satish Gujaran is tirelessly preparing for his thirteenth participation. Having completed 12 consecutive races, his journey reflects both personal struggle and triumph.
Gujarans’ Transformation began during a trip to Durban when a friend recommended he start running to help him quit his cigarette habit of 40 a day. That simple advice set him on a path that dramatically changed his life.
Although he continued to battle his smoking addiction after returning to India, it was in 2009, upon joining the Isha Foundation’s yoga classes, that he finally quit. This newfound freedom enabled him to fully commit to long-distance running, leading him to the iconic Comrades Marathon.
The Challenge of the Race
His first Comrades Marathon was a down run, and inspired by the challenge, he aimed for a back-to-back medal, quickly becoming captivated by the race’s demands. “Running teaches us valuable lessons about life,” Gujaran said, emphasizing the euphoric feeling experienced at the finish line.
Rigorous Training Regimen
Preparing for the Comrades Marathon demands strict training. In Mumbai, this involves hill workouts and long runs during the night to escape the heat and traffic. Working through this rigorous schedule has fortified his physical and mental toughness, equipping him for the marathon’s specific challenges.
The Comrades features both uphill and downhill runs, presenting distinct hurdles. The uphill run requires exceptional strength, while the downhill run exerts pressure on the body.
“Adopting a run/walk strategy during the race can be crucial for managing fatigue,” he explains. He recalls a particularly difficult moment during an uphill run when poor nutrition left him feeling drained before the halfway point. An ambulance staff’s quick assistance with energy-boosting sugar syrup helped him complete the race successfully.
Unique Aspects of the Comrades Marathon
Gujarans perspective on the fantastic crowd support speaks volumes. Particularly for international runners, the encouragement from spectators enhances the overall experience. He admires the meticulous planning behind the event and shares how it creates a respectful atmosphere for those crossing the finish line.
Memorable moments from his races include achieving his Green Number, awarded for completing ten consecutive Comrades, and his nomination for the Gems Spirit of Comrades Award. These milestones underscore the dedication and resilience he has shown throughout his journey.
As Satish Gujaran readies himself for another Comrades Marathon, his inspiring story continues to resonate with many, encouraging others to pursue their own extraordinary paths.
