Indus Towers Expands Focus to African Markets with Airtel Presence
## Indus Towers Expands into African Markets
Bharti Airtel’s telecom tower subsidiary, Indus Towers, announced plans to extend its operations beyond India into selected emerging markets, particularly in Africa where Airtel is already present.
### Expansion Plans
Indus Towers’ board has approved a strategy to explore opportunities in Africa, starting with Nigeria, Uganda, and Zambia. These regions are seen as favorable for revenue diversification, scalability, and fostering long-term value creation.
### Leveraging Existing Relationships
As one of India’s largest tower infrastructure providers, boasting over 251,700 telecom towers across 22 regions, Indus aims to utilize its strong relationship with Airtel. Their solid financial grounding will enable them to establish a competitive edge in these new markets.
### Potential Further Expansion
In addition to the initial three countries, Indus has expressed interest in assessing additional African markets where Airtel operates. Airtel Africa maintains mobile networks in 11 countries, including Kenya, Malawi, and Rwanda. The company reported 166.1 million subscribers across its markets by March 2025.
### Competitive Landscape
Indus Towers will face stiff competition in Africa from companies like IHS Towers, Helios Towers, and American Tower Corp (ATC). ATC, notably, entered into a contract with Airtel Africa in 2022 to facilitate mobile network expansion in various countries, including Nigeria and Uganda. This deal previously attracted scrutiny from competition regulators.
### Compliance and Future Outlook
Indus’s expansion into Africa is contingent upon receiving necessary approvals and meeting regulatory standards. According to Indus Towers’ MD and CEO, Prachur Sah, the company is strategically positioned to offer innovative and economical solutions in Africa’s burgeoning telecom market.
