Facebook’s initiative, Internet.org, is expanding its reach into Africa via a collaboration with Cell C, South Africa’s third-largest mobile operator. This partnership aims to enhance internet accessibility in underserved areas of the country.
Overview of Free Basic Services
Launching on September 1, 2015, this initiative will provide Cell C customers with free access to 28 essential internet services. These include six educational platforms, four healthcare resources, and various job listings and news sources.
The program will be available free for the first year, with customers having the option to purchase additional data bundles from Cell C while using Facebook or Internet.org.

Dos Santo, CEO of Cell C, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that many South Africans, especially in rural areas, often travel great distances to access information on employment or healthcare. Internet.org aims to bridge this gap and make vital information more accessible.

Access to information technology and communications (ICT) is crucial for integrating individuals into the formal economy. According to the 2014 General Household Survey by Stats SA, only 10.9% of South African households have internet access at home, marking a slow growth of just 0.9% annually.
