Larsen & Toubro in South Africa
Larsen & Toubro’s Strategic Expansion in Africa’s Power Sector
Johannesburg, South Africa – August 27, 2025
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Indian multinational conglomerate, has been actively expanding its footprint in Africa’s power sector, particularly in South Africa. In October 2024, L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division secured significant orders in West Asia and Africa, valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore. These projects aim to enhance high-voltage electricity grids, with a notable initiative being the construction of the National System Control Centre for Kenya’s electricity transmission company, KETRACO. In South Africa, L&T has been collaborating with local entities to address the country’s power challenges. In 2010, L&T formed a joint venture with Befula Investments, a South African company, to establish Larsen & Toubro T&D SA. This venture focuses on capitalizing on power transmission and distribution opportunities within South Africa. (economictimes.indiatimes.com)
Further strengthening its local presence, L&T Infotech, a subsidiary of L&T, approved the transfer of a 25.1% stake in its South African arm to Rossex Investments. This strategic move aims to broaden local participation in line with South Africa’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003. Despite the transfer, L&T Infotech continues to hold a 74.9% stake, ensuring sustained control over its South African operations. (zeebiz.com)
These initiatives underscore L&T’s commitment to contributing to South Africa’s power infrastructure development and its broader strategy of strengthening ties within the African continent.
