## Mahindra Enhances Commitment in South Africa

Mahindra is taking a major step to expand its footprint in South Africa by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). This agreement paves the way for a detailed feasibility study focused on the potential development of a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicle assembly facility in the country.

## Milestone Production Achievement

Coinciding with this announcement, Mahindra South Africa celebrates a remarkable achievement: the production of its 25,000th locally assembled Pik Up on February 24, 2025. Additionally, in August 2023, the company presented its next-generation Pik Up to a global audience, reinforcing South Africa’s strategic importance in Mahindra’s international plans.

## Expansion of Production Capacity

Mahindra South Africa is actively working to enhance its production capacity at the assembly facility managed by AIH Logistics in KwaZulu-Natal. This move highlights the company’s ongoing commitment and growing presence in the South African automotive market.

## Exploring Local Manufacturing Opportunities

The MoU is a pivotal step in assessing the possibility of expanding local manufacturing capabilities. The feasibility study will evaluate various essential elements, such as automotive industry incentives, export market potential, workforce development, and the logistics infrastructure necessary for success.

### Focus on Logistics and Supply Chain

The study will also consider logistics and supply chain feasibility, including the identification of suitable locations for the new assembly facility. This analysis aims to help Mahindra integrate more deeply into South Africa’s industrial landscape, particularly in New Energy Vehicles (NEV).

Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, stated, “Reaching the milestone of our 25,000th locally assembled Pik Up is a testament to Mahindra’s growing footprint and long-term commitment to South Africa. This MoU allows us to explore the feasibility of expanding our local assembly capabilities while supporting the country’s industrial growth objectives.”

While the MoU indicates Mahindra’s interest in local manufacturing, it remains an exploratory step without any immediate commitment to a CKD facility. The outcomes of the feasibility study will guide future decisions.

### Alignment with National Goals

Rian Coetzee, Acting Divisional Executive for Industry Planning and Project Development at the IDC, noted that Mahindra’s proactive approach aligns with the South African Automotive Master Plan (SAAM) 2035. This plan aims to enhance South Africa’s competitiveness as a hub for automotive assembly.

“Depending on the feasibility study’s outcomes, there is considerable potential for the company to increase its production output in South Africa, which could create new employment opportunities,” Coetzee added.
