## Microsoft’s Investments in Africa and India

Microsoft is making significant strides with two distinct investments in South Africa and India. One is aimed at enhancing cloud infrastructure, while the other centers on afforestation efforts.

### Cloud Expansion in South Africa

The tech giant plans to invest ZAR 5.4 billion (approximately US$296 million) by 2027 to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in South Africa. This initiative responds to the rising demand for Azure services in the region. This investment follows a previous commitment of ZAR 20.4 billion (about US$1.1 billion) over the last three years, which led to the establishment of the country’s inaugural enterprise-grade data centers in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

This new round of funding aims to empower various organizations, ranging from startups to large corporations and government bodies, to access Microsoft’s cloud and AI offerings.

### Commitment to Local Talent Development

Earlier this year, Microsoft pledged to train one million South Africans by 2026, focusing on equipping local companies, government, and youth with the skills necessary to develop AI solutions tailored to regional challenges. In 2024 alone, the initiative aims to provide training in digital and AI skills to over 150,000 individuals, resulting in 95,000 certifications and 1,800 job placements through its Skills for Jobs program.

### Afforestation Initiative in India

In a parallel effort, Microsoft has agreed to acquire 1.5 million tons of carbon removal credits from a large-scale afforestation project in India, projected to span 30 years. This agreement, inked with Climate Impact Partners and Terra Natural Capital, marks Microsoft’s debut in the Indian carbon market and its largest carbon removal purchase in the Asia-Pacific region to date.

### Overview of the Panna Afforestation Project

The Panna project covers an impressive 20,000 hectares and aims to plant 11.6 million mixed native trees across agricultural and community areas. This initiative not only targets carbon removal but also generates new income sources by introducing fruit trees and creating jobs through nurseries and project monitoring.
