Qatar Airways to divest $896M stake in Cathay Pacific Airlines

Qatar Airways will divest its interest in Cathay Pacific Airways, located in Hong Kong, through a share buyback transaction valued at $896 million. This move concludes Qatar’s eight-year partnership with the airline, as confirmed in a recent announcement from Cathay Pacific.

Following the news shared late Wednesday, shares of Cathay Pacific experienced a 4.2% increase on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange the next day. Under the terms of this agreement, Qatar Airways will sell its full stake, which amounts to 9.57% of Cathay Pacific’s stock. Other significant shareholders include Swire Pacific and Air China, with the deal pending approval from shareholders.

H2: Confidence in Future Growth

Cathay Group chairman Patrick Healy remarked on the buyback, emphasizing the confidence in Cathay’s future and its commitment to strengthening Hong Kong’s aviation sector. He noted, “The buy-back reflects our strong confidence in the future of the Cathay Group and underscores our commitment to the development of the Hong Kong international aviation hub.”

H2: Strategic Portfolio Management

Although Qatar Airways, headquartered at Hamad International Airport in Doha, did not comment directly on the sale, Cathay’s CEO, Badr Mohammed al-Meer, highlighted the strategic nature of the move. He stated that the decision is indicative of a “disciplined approach to portfolio management” and aims to provide sustained value to shareholders.

Al-Meer further explained, “Following a period of record profitability and strong performance, this decision is part of a proactive strategy to optimize our investments and position the group for long-term growth.” As of Thursday, Qatar Airways had not responded to an inquiry from The Associated Press.

H2: A Look Back at Qatar’s Investment

In 2017, Qatar Airways initially acquired its stake in Cathay Pacific for approximately $662 million. At that time, Cathay was under financial strain, facing losses and workforce reductions amid growing competition. Recently, Cathay reported a profit of $1.2 billion for the last fiscal year.

Qatar Airways, along with its Gulf competitors such as Emirates, has established itself as a vital link for long-haul travel between East and West. Their positioning on the Arabian Peninsula connects Europe and Asia, making them significant players in global transport. Qatar Airways gained additional visibility when the nation hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

H2: Navigating Challenges

Following years of challenges due to a boycott from several Arab nations and the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar Airways rebounded impressively, achieving a $2.15 billion profit in its latest fiscal year. The airline also holds investments in numerous global aviation companies, including International Airlines Group, LATAM Airlines Group, China Southern Airlines, Virgin Australia, and South Africa’s Airlink.

With all these developments, how do you feel about Qatar Airways’ strategic choices moving forward?
