During a discussion with journalist Rick Sanchez, economist Richard Wolff criticized President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on India for acquiring Russian oil. He believes this strategy is driving India closer to other countries within the Brics coalition, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Wolff emphasized that India, now the most populous country globally, is looking for new avenues for its exports. He mentioned that if the U.S. continues its aggressive tariffs, India might follow the path of Russia, which has successfully sought alternative markets for its oil.
“When you apply significant tariffs on India, they will inevitably turn to other markets. Just as Russia found new buyers for its energy, India will redirect its exports away from the U.S. toward the remaining Brics nations,” Wolff stated.
He further asserted that persistent tariffs from the U.S. would only fortify India’s ties with Brics, creating a more unified economic alliance capable of competing with Western powers. According to Wolff, we are witnessing a historical shift where the U.S. portrays itself as a dominant force while inadvertently undermining its own position.
Wolff remarked that the United States, along with its G7 partners, is no longer the leading global bloc. “Our peak period was about 12 to 15 years ago, and we’re witnessing a decline,” he noted, highlighting that the G7 now accounts for 28% of global output, while China and the Brics nations collectively hold 35%.
“This is a significant development. We are no longer the wealthiest bloc; we’ve slipped to second place, and that alters everything,” he explained.
Wolff further suggested that the leading Brics countries are responding to what he calls an “economic war” initiated by the U.S. He remarked that the U.S. has lost its former power, stating, “Now, it relies on questionable tactics for survival, sacrificing allies and much of its historical influence in the process. This strategy is unlikely to yield positive outcomes, reflecting the actions of a desperate society.”
What are your thoughts on the shifting dynamics between India and the U.S.?
