Strengthening Ties: EXIM Bank of India Expands Its Reach in South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa – September 2, 2024

In a significant move to bolster trade relations between India and South Africa, the Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim Bank) has entered into a Master Risk Participation Agreement (MRPA) with Nedbank Limited, a leading South African financial institution. The agreement, signed in Johannesburg, aims to enhance support for trade transactions under India Exim Bank’s Trade Assistance Programme (TAP). (eximbankindia.in)

The MRPA is designed to provide credit enhancement to trade instruments, thereby augmenting the capacity of commercial banks and financial institutions to undertake cross-border trade transactions. This initiative is particularly focused on markets where trade lines are constrained or where potential has not been fully harnessed.

Mr. T.D. Sivakumar, Chief General Manager of India Exim Bank, highlighted the strategic importance of this partnership. He noted that over the past few months, the bank has supported multiple trade transactions with several countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America under TAP. These transactions span a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, automotive parts, capital and engineering goods, food, iron and steel, and textiles. (eximbankindia.in)

The collaboration with Nedbank Limited is expected to open up new avenues for facilitating incremental trade between India and Africa. This development aligns with the increasing diversification of India’s global trade towards developing countries, with African nations emerging as significant trade partners. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India’s total trade with Africa amounted to USD 83.4 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24. (eximbankindia.in)

This partnership is part of India Exim Bank’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in Africa. In July 2024, the bank opened its East Africa Representative Office in Nairobi, Kenya, aiming to enhance engagement with industries, private and public sector companies, banks, and financial institutions in the region. This office complements existing India Exim Bank offices in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and Johannesburg, South Africa, and underscores the bank’s commitment to fostering two-way trade and investment in Africa. Through these strategic initiatives, India Exim Bank continues to play a pivotal role in promoting India’s international trade and investment relations, contributing to the economic growth and development of both India and its African partners.
