Sun TV Soars on Brokerage’s IPL Opportunity Insights — Target Price Revealed

In its most recent assessment, Avendus Spark has adjusted its rating on Sun TV Networks from ‘Buy’ to ‘Sell’, revising the target price from Rs 495 to Rs 680. This suggests an increase of nearly 20% from the current market value.

Additionally, Avendus has set a three-year price target of Rs 840, indicating a remarkable 48% upside potential.

This update reflects Sun TV’s status as a ‘pure-play’ option for investors looking to tap into the immensely popular Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the biggest sporting spectacles globally.

According to Avendus, the market has already priced in all the existing negatives for Sun TV, allowing the company to focus on future opportunities, particularly those linked to the IPL.

In simple terms, Sun TV is considered the leading choice for investors eager to capitalize on the IPL’s ongoing success, as pointed out by Avendus.

This reputation stems from Sun TV’s IPL team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, which has consistently performed well over the last decade.

While the IPL has already gained substantial traction in India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been working to broaden its global reach. Platforms like Netflix are exploring sporting events like the IPL to attract new subscribers, which could further benefit Sun TV.

Avendus also highlights the globalization of IPL franchises, noting that Sun TV has recently acquired the Northern Superchargers, a team based in London competing in The Hundred.

Moreover, Sun TV holds cricket franchises in South Africa, operating through Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

According to Bloomberg data, a total of 15 analysts are tracking Sun TV Networks, with seven advocating for buy recommendations. Five analysts suggest holding the stock, while three have issued sell ratings.

What do you think about the future of Sun TV Networks in light of these updates?
