Top 5 Global Market Trends to Watch Next Week

U.S. President Donald Trump’s unpredictable tariff strategies are set to coincide with a week loaded with crucial inflation updates from both the U.S. and Britain, alongside growth and retail statistics from China. Meanwhile, earnings reports are kicking off in the U.S. and Europe, and G20 finance officials are gearing up for a meeting in South Africa.

Here’s a preview of the upcoming week from contributors across the globe.

1. TARIFF TEST FOR U.S. INC

A pivotal inflation report will provide insights for Wall Street regarding the Federal Reserve’s potential interest rate adjustments as second-quarter earnings come in. The consumer price index for June, expected to be released on Tuesday, is projected to show a 0.3% monthly increase based on a Reuters survey.

Recent minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June meeting revealed that only a few members anticipated a rate cut this month, while most expressed concerns about inflationary pressures stemming from Trump’s tariffs. The future for interest rates appears tight, with only a slim prospect of a cut by the end of July and indications suggesting an easing in September.

Trump’s economic policies will closely follow corporate earnings announcements, marking the first earnings quarter impacted by these tariff conflicts. Major banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, along with companies like Netflix, Johnson & Johnson, and 3M, will present their results in the coming week.

2. AND IN EUROPE

Europe will also see the onset of second-quarter earnings, but the forecasts are bleaker there. In the U.S., earnings growth is anticipated to be the weakest in two years, with S&P 500 companies expected to report a 5.8% year-on-year increase, a significant drop from nearly 14% in the previous quarter.

Moreover, STOXX 600 earnings in Europe are forecasted to decline by 0.2% following a 2.2% growth in the last quarter. The guidance provided during this period will be vital to understand the repercussions of ongoing tariffs and increasing concerns about potential new levies.

Despite the market conditions, the S&P 500 continues to climb towards new record highs, and European markets like Frankfurt and London remain near previous peaks, seemingly unfazed by uncertainties and slowing growth rates.

3. STIMULATING SPENDING

Trump’s renewed ties with Chinese leader Xi Jinping may provide some relief for policymakers in Beijing, allowing them to address significant economic challenges domestically. GDP figures set to be revealed on Tuesday should indicate continued growth, remaining above the government’s target rate of around 5%.

However, simultaneous retail sales data may reflect that consumers are prioritizing savings over spending, which could hinder efforts to shift the economy towards greater consumption. In response, Beijing recently announced measures designed to stabilize employment, including enhanced social insurance subsidies, specialized loans, and support for young job seekers.

As the politburo plans its upcoming meeting, expectations are mounting for additional stimulus measures, and any weakness in data will likely amplify that speculation.

4. A STICKY SITUATION

With an inflation rate of 3.4%, the UK holds the highest rate among G7 countries. Upcoming CPI figures could reveal just how persistent these price pressures remain. A recent U.S. tariff agreement, which turned out to be less severe than anticipated, together with a stronger pound, may mitigate inflation impacts on the UK.

Over the last five years, regular pay growth has exceeded 5%, indicating stability. However, the current tax burden reaches its highest levels since the 1940s, and real wage growth has slowed considerably to just 1.5%, the lowest in nearly two years.

Recent data indicated the economy contracted for a second consecutive month in May, presenting a challenging situation for Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, who will be addressing the annual Mansion House speech alongside Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey on July 15.

5. A TEST OF RELEVANCE

G20 finance ministers and central bankers will convene in Durban starting Thursday, under South Africa’s presidency, as concerns mount regarding the group’s effectiveness on issues like stalled debt relief, climate finance, and access to capital for emerging economies.

Progress in South Africa’s priority areas has been alarmingly slow. The initiatives like the Cost of Capital Commission and the Just Energy Transition Partnership are still struggling for formal support and momentum. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will notably be absent from the meeting, opting instead to attend Japan’s World Expo 2025.

Meanwhile, the BRICS alliance and other alternative platforms are attempting to bridge some gaps, although the U.S. government has criticized certain initiatives for being perceived as anti-American.
