Varun Beverages Q2 Profit Surpasses Estimates Despite Monsoon Impact

Varun Beverages in India reported a surprisingly strong profit for the second quarter, thanks to efficient cost management strategies that mitigated the impact of declining bottled beverage sales due to the early monsoon season.

The company experienced a 3% drop in consolidated sales volume, attributing this to “abnormally high” rainfall across the nation.

Domestic Volumes Decline 7%, Revenue Falls 2.3%

For the PepsiCo bottler, domestic volumes fell by 7%, leading to a 2.3% decrease in revenue. Despite this downturn, Varun Beverages effectively reduced its operational costs, resulting in nearly a 4% decline in total expenses compared to the previous year. Consequently, net profit increased by 5% year-over-year, reaching ₹1,317 crore.

Internationally, the company saw a positive trend with volumes increasing by 15.1%, led by a remarkable 16.1% growth in South Africa.

Key Announcements: Management Changes and Acquisitions

In a recent filing with the BSE, Varun Beverages introduced Pankaj Madan as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The company also made headlines by acquiring a 50% equity stake in Everest Industrial Lanka, based in Sri Lanka, which manufactures visi-coolers and related products.

The Board of Directors approved an interim dividend compliant with the company’s dividend policy, amounting to 25% of the face value, or ₹0.50 per share. This decision is expected to lead to a total cash outflow of approximately ₹1,691 million.

Varun Beverages’ stock has shown remarkable growth, experiencing a 12.32% increase over the past month. The company, known for packaging and distributing beverages under well-known brands like Pepsi and Tropicana—and its own brands such as “Jive” and “Cream Bell”—is also making strides in African markets, tapping into the vast growth potential in developing regions.
