Vedanta to Upgrade Zambia Copper Smelter for Enhanced Production

Plans for Smelter Refurbishment by Vedanta’s Zambian Unit

Vedanta Resources is set to revamp its copper smelting facility in Zambia, aiming to boost production at operations that saw a recovery last year.

Upgrading Operations for Increased Efficiency

Konkola Copper Mines announced plans for “a full shutdown and refurbishment” to enhance structural integrity and operational efficiency. The goal is to achieve an output of 300,000 tons by the beginning of the next decade, significantly higher than last year’s production, which was below 10% of this target.

Investment and Recovery Efforts

Owned by Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, Vedanta regained oversight of Konkola Copper Mines roughly a year back after settling a prolonged dispute with Zambian authorities. This resolution involved commitments to invest over $1.2 billion over five years to enhance operations and settle debts.

Since resuming management, the company has already invested over $400 million into KCM, including $250 million to clear debts and a further $124 million, as indicated in a recent statement. A significant portion of this investment is earmarked for advancing the underground Konkola Deep mining operations. Specific details regarding the cost, start date, and duration of the smelter refurbishment have yet to be disclosed.

Impact of Export Tax Waiver

Last month, Zambia, the second-largest copper producer in Africa, waived an export tax for 255,000 tons of copper concentrates. This decision was partly prompted by the fact that KCM’s smelter is currently unable to process the material.

Is there anything else you would like to know about Zambia’s copper mining industry?
