Venus Remedies Faces Quality Control Challenges in South Africa

Johannesburg, August 2, 2025 – Venus Remedies, an Indian pharmaceutical company, is under scrutiny in South Africa following reports of substandard cancer drugs distributed across more than 100 countries. A recent study revealed that all eight samples of Venus Remedies’ cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy drug, failed quality tests, with six containing less than half the stated active ingredient. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) conducted the study, highlighting the global distribution of these substandard drugs, including to South Africa. The findings have raised concerns about the safety and efficacy of cancer treatments available in the country.

Venus Remedies has responded to the allegations, stating that the study’s results are “not scientifically plausible” given the company’s “validated manufacturing systems and quality controls.” The company also mentioned that storage conditions during the supply chain might have affected the researchers’ test results, as cyclophosphamide is highly temperature-sensitive. This development comes after Venus Remedies secured a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification from Kenya in May 2023, aiming to strengthen its position in the African pharmaceutical market.
