Wesgro Aims to Boost Tourism from China and North America
Welcoming Chinese Tourists to Cape Town
Wesgro recently expressed its pride in participating in the welcoming of the initial group of tourists from China, arriving in Cape Town as part of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS). This government initiative aims to simplify the visa application process for group travelers from China and India, making it easier to visit South Africa.
By enhancing accessibility, this intervention significantly supports the Western Cape’s goal of doubling tourism. Wesgro stated, “We warmly welcome these visitors to Cape Town and the Western Cape and look forward to strengthening economic ties with China through tourism, trade, and investment.”
Expanding Global Tourism Connections
Beyond fostering tourism connections with China, Wesgro, which serves as the official tourism, trade, and investment promotional body for the Western Cape, is also looking to engage with the North American tourism market.
In an effort to build brand loyalty and enhance market access, South African Tourism (SAT) North America organized a three-day Virtual Roadshow from February 19 to 21, 2025. Wesgro participated as an exhibitor, showcasing the attractions of Cape Town and the Western Cape alongside other provincial tourism authorities and South African tourism offerings.
Engaging with Travel Advisors
The Virtual Roadshow facilitated direct interaction between exhibitors and travel advisors from the US and Canada. It encouraged more focused dialogues tailored to the specialties of the travel advisors, enhancing the engagement experience for all parties involved.
During the event, exhibitors and travel advisors communicated through scheduled one-on-one meetings and additional inquiries.
Tourism Recovery Indicators
The year 2024 has marked a significant recovery for the tourism sector, with the US emerging as the top source market. Recovery rates reached an impressive 99% of the levels seen in 2019, with expectations that by 2025, arrivals from the US will surpass those figures.
Opportunities for Leisure Tourism Events
Wesgro has initiated applications for its Leisure Tourism Event Partnerships. The online application process was open from February 17 to March 7, 2025, inviting event organizers to collaborate in promoting the province’s diverse tourism offerings.
This partnership aims to create opportunities for smaller, niche leisure events, generating economic impact and job opportunities while boosting tourism in lesser-visited towns and communities. There is a particular focus on events that combat seasonal fluctuations and contribute to a sustainable events pipeline in the region.
