Zomato (Exited) in South Africa

Zomato Shuts Down South African Operations Amid Strategic Restructuring

Johannesburg, South Africa – January 17, 2022

In a strategic move to streamline its global operations, Indian food delivery giant Zomato has officially ceased its activities in South Africa. The company announced the deregistration of its subsidiary, Zomato South Africa Proprietary (Pty) Ltd., effective January 3, 2022. (economictimes.indiatimes.com)

The decision to dissolve the South African subsidiary was part of Zomato’s broader “cleaning-up” exercise, aimed at focusing resources on more profitable markets. Zomato South Africa had not been actively operating and was not considered a significant contributor to the company’s overall revenue. Consequently, the closure is not expected to impact Zomato’s financial performance. (economictimes.indiatimes.com)

This move aligns with Zomato’s recent trend of scaling back its international presence. Prior to South Africa, the company had shut down subsidiaries in the United States, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The only international operation currently active is in the United Arab Emirates. (economictimes.indiatimes.com)

Zomato’s exit from South Africa also reflects the challenges faced by global food delivery platforms in the region. Local competitors, such as Uber Eats and Mr D Food, have established a strong foothold, making it difficult for international players to gain significant market share. Additionally, the South African market presents unique logistical and regulatory hurdles that have proven challenging for foreign companies.

For South African consumers and restaurant partners, the closure of Zomato’s platform means a reduction in online food delivery options. However, established services like Uber Eats and Mr D Food continue to operate, offering a range of choices for both diners and dining establishments.

Zomato’s decision underscores the importance of strategic market evaluation and the need for companies to adapt their global strategies in response to local market dynamics. As the company refocuses its efforts on its core markets, stakeholders in South Africa will need to adjust to the evolving landscape of the food delivery industry.
