Aditya Birla Group (UltraTech Cement) in South Africa

UltraTech Cement’s Strategic Moves in South Africa and Beyond

Johannesburg, August 31, 2025 – UltraTech Cement, a subsidiary of India’s Aditya Birla Group, has been actively expanding its footprint in the South African cement industry. In June 2023, Afrimat, a South African mining and materials company, acquired Lafarge South Africa, including its cement plants and quarries. This move marked a significant consolidation in the local market. (globalcement.com)

While UltraTech Cement did not participate in this acquisition, the company has been focusing on growth opportunities within India. In June 2024, UltraTech announced the acquisition of a 23% stake in India Cements for ₹1,885 crore, aiming to strengthen its position in the southern market. (cnbctv18.com)

In the first quarter of the 2025 financial year, UltraTech reported an EBITDA of ₹44.1 billion, a 46% increase year-on-year, with a 10% growth in cement volumes. The company also reduced its net debt to ₹163 billion from ₹177 billion in the previous quarter. (za.investing.com)

Despite these developments, UltraTech Cement has not made significant inroads into the South African market. The recent consolidation efforts by local companies like Afrimat have intensified competition, making it challenging for new entrants. As of now, UltraTech’s operations remain primarily focused on the Indian subcontinent.

In summary, while UltraTech Cement continues to pursue growth through strategic acquisitions and operational improvements, its presence in South Africa remains limited due to the competitive landscape and recent market consolidations.
