Amazon Leads as Top Global Corporate Buyer of Renewable Energy for Fifth Year

## Amazon’s Global Renewable Energy Initiatives

Amazon is making strides in the renewable energy sector by investing in solar and wind projects worldwide. With over 600 initiatives, the company aims to support regions with heavily polluted energy grids in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

## Commitment to Climate Pledge

As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, the company is dedicated to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Building renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind, is one of the most effective strategies for addressing climate change. According to Bloomberg NEF, Amazon has been recognized as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy for five consecutive years, with its efforts contributing to over 600 wind and solar projects globally.

### Impact on Energy Consumption

Many of these renewable projects may not have materialized without Amazon’s investment. Collectively, they aim to supply electricity equivalent to that consumed by approximately 8.3 million U.S. homes. By implementing these initiatives, Amazon not only matches its operational electricity use but also introduces new renewable energy to the grid, enhancing its sustainability and reliability.

## Targeting Carbon-Intensive Grids

Amazon strategically focuses on deploying projects in regions that depend heavily on carbon-intensive energy sources. Here, solar and wind farms can have a more substantial impact in reducing carbon emissions while facilitating the transition away from less sustainable energy options.

### Global Investments

To date, Amazon has financed more than 40 utility-scale solar and wind projects across nations grappling with high emissions and significant fossil fuel dependency, such as Australia, China, and India, among others. In South Africa, a notable example is the 10-megawatt solar plant located in the Northern Cape Province, expected to produce around 28,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to power over 8,000 average South African homes. Additionally, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest R46 billion in the Cape Town area by 2029.

## Making a Difference Locally

Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasizes the company’s commitment to impactful renewable energy projects. “Amazon isn’t just the top corporate purchaser of solar and wind; we’re also prioritizing projects where they can have the biggest impact on curbing emissions and improving local environments,” she states.

### The Role of Carbon Matching

The practice called “carbon matching” involves building renewable energy projects on polluted grids to amplify their environmental benefits. Research from WattTime, an environmental tech nonprofit, suggests that optimizing project locations could help avoid up to five gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions globally.

## Focus on India

In India, where fossil fuels predominantly power the grid, Amazon has invested in nine utility-scale solar and wind farms. By concentrating efforts in this region, the potential to avert 55 times more carbon emissions annually is significantly higher than if these projects were situated in Sweden, known for its decarbonized energy grid.
