W/O Laren Krishna’s story is an extraordinary tale of determination and resilience. Born into a community that often didn’t encourage military aspirations, he stood out as a visionary. Early Years

Krishna was born in the vibrant community of Campbell’s Town in Mount Edgecombe, located north of Durban. He belonged to a family of four siblings, with roots tracing back to Indian indentured laborers from the 1860s. Growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he was surrounded by an environment where military service was seldom promoted.

The Road to Military Aspirations

From a young age, he attended government schools and engaged in informal sports along the cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal. In January 1984, Krishna set his sights on joining the military, enrolling in a two-year voluntary national service program with the South African Navy. His journey took him to the SAS Jalsena Training Unit, originally formed as the South Africa Indian Corps Training Battalion.

Special Forces Selection

To qualify for the Special Forces, individuals were required to meet rigorous psychological and physical standards. The selection process was daunting, with a high attrition rate—over 90% of candidates dropped out over the course of intense training. Nonetheless, Krishna persevered, eventually earning the title of ‘Recce Operator.’

Breaking New Ground

Joining the 1 Recce Regiment in December 1985, Krishna became the first South African Special Forces Operator of Indian descent on April 16, 1987. This achievement was groundbreaking, helping to challenge stereotypes around the combat roles of Indians.
