## Tanzania’s Satellite Launch Milestone
Tanzania has recently achieved a significant milestone by securing a position in orbit at 16 degrees West for its first satellite. This development marks an essential step toward the nation’s inaugural satellite launch.
The announcement was made by Nape Nnauye, the Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology. He described this accomplishment as one of the key outcomes of the 2023 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23).
### Government Commitment
In July, Minister Nnauye expressed the government’s dedication to launching the country’s first satellite within the year. However, a specific launch date has not yet been confirmed.
### Expanding Potential
As noted by local news sources, the potential benefits of a national satellite for Tanzania are extensive. It could enhance communication, support agricultural practices, aid in disaster management, and assist in natural resource exploration—a diverse range of sectors that are vital for the economy.
## Context within Africa
Several African nations have successfully launched their satellites. Egypt leads the continent with nine satellites, followed by South Africa with eight, Algeria with seven, and Nigeria with six. Additionally, countries such as Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Mauritius have also made strides in satellite technology. Recently, Djibouti launched its first satellite, Djibouti 1A, aboard a SpaceX Transporter-9.
### Future Launches in Africa
According to various reports, Senegal is preparing for its first satellite launch, initially slated for 2021 but postponed to 2023 due to the pandemic. The launch is now likely to occur in the first quarter of 2024.
Recently, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) entered into a partnership to develop an Earth observation satellite for Mauritius.
