Nokia and Alstom Partner to Launch Private Wireless Network in India

Nokia and Alstom Team Up for Delhi-Meerut RRTS

Nokia has partnered with the French multinational company Alstom to develop a private wireless network specifically for the National Capital Regional Transport Corporation’s (NCRTC) Delhi to Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).

Supporting Advanced Signaling Technologies

The Finnish telecommunications giant announced that this network will enhance safety by utilizing the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 Signaling, which is crucial for commuters on the high-speed rail line currently in development.

The Delhi to Meerut RRTS marks the inaugural phase of a broader high-speed rail initiative, designed to foster sustainable economic and social growth through better connectivity in Delhi and its neighboring districts.

The project is slated to be fully operational by 2025. The low-emission RRTS will facilitate transportation at average speeds of 100 km/h, significantly cutting down on travel time and alleviating road traffic congestion.

Details of the Wireless Network

Per the announcement, the robust private network will be built on Nokia’s Modular Private Wireless solution (MPW). It will incorporate state-of-the-art AirScale radios, an evolved packet core based on Air Frame capabilities, alongside 7250 IXR IP/MPLS backhaul routers, a mission-critical group communication platform, and a Network Services Platform (NSP) management system. This network will span an 82 km rail line comprising 25 stations.

This infrastructure is intended to support ETCS Levels 2 and 3 signaling, plus automated operations (ATO). Such innovations will allow trains to constantly receive radio signals for movement authorization, ensuring accurate direction and position reporting for onboard safety.

Key Quotes from Industry Leaders

Thameem Kamaldeen, Managing Director at Alstom Digital Mobility, highlighted the collaboration with Nokia as pivotal for the advanced signaling systems integral to NCRTC, stating, “We are excited to work with Nokia, leveraging its comprehensive private wireless capabilities.” This new rail network is anticipated to be transformative for the region.

Kamal Ballout, Head of Enterprise Solutions for CHIMEA (China, India, Middle East, and Africa) at Nokia, commented, “Nokia has facilitated digital transformations for over 380 enterprises across varying sectors. Our advanced railway solutions promise an elevated level of connectivity for rail operators, crucial for real-time awareness of train positions to ensure passenger safety.”

What’s Next?

The introduction of LTE/4.9G technology within the ETCS framework stands as a key milestone for railway operators, paving the way toward the Future Railway Communication System (FRMCS).
