SA Blueberries Thrive in Asia: A Flourishing Industry with Global Prospects

The South African blueberry sector is witnessing impressive growth, thanks to a remarkable rise in exports and the exploration of unconventional markets, especially in Asia. As reported by Berries ZA, the current season has seen nearly 5,000 tonnes of blueberries exported, marking a striking 34.1% increase from last year’s figure of 3,727 tonnes. The bulk of these exports has gone to traditional markets, particularly the UK and Europe, with the UK experiencing a significant surge of 78.9% to 2,040.6 tonnes, although exports to Europe dipped by 4.3%.

As traditional markets remain vital, newer regions like the Middle and Far East are also showing considerable growth. Exports to the Middle East increased by 31.1%, amounting to 996.48 tonnes, while those to the Far East rose by 39%, reaching 671.92 tonnes. This diversification aligns with the broader strategy of the local horticultural export industry, aiming to lessen dependence on traditional markets.

A Game Changer: Access to Asian Markets

The recent Fall Creek South Africa Connect Day held in Paarl highlighted the tremendous potential of entering markets in China, India, and other Asian regions, a development that could significantly reshape the South African blueberry landscape. A panel discussion featuring industry leaders, moderated by Nick Bowen, Grower Support Representative at Fall Creek, focused on the future of market access and advancements in genetic innovation.

Craig Schaefer from Core Fruit stressed the necessity for consistent quality and the importance of developing blueberry varieties that can endure long sea journeys, as air freight becomes increasingly impractical. Jean Kotze from Fall Creek reiterated that advancements in genetic innovation have turned blueberries into a year-round product. The development of low-chill varieties is particularly crucial, as it enables South African growers to compete on a global scale.

Blueberries: A New Opportunity for Avocado Farmers

In regions favorable for avocado cultivation, blueberries are emerging as an appealing alternative crop. Zac Bard, an executive at Westfalia Fruit, mentioned that many avocado farmers are branching out into blueberries, especially in areas where climate risks are becoming prominent. Bard also highlighted the success of the avocado sector in penetrating Asian markets—a trend he believes blueberries will soon emulate.

Challenges and Opportunities in Expanding Markets

Despite these promising opportunities, the panel cautioned that entering new markets like China and India will not be a swift endeavor. Elzette Schutte of Berries ZA noted that while China is a priority and South African blueberries are next to gain market access, it could still take years due to required governmental negotiations. India presents potential as well; however, entry barriers exist due to tariffs, with current import duties for blueberries set at 10%.

On a brighter note, as global blueberry production faces declines attributed to factors such as El Niño affecting key countries like Peru, Chile, and Mexico, South African exporters possess a unique competitive advantage. The alteration in Peru’s harvest season could further benefit South African producers, particularly those situated in the north.

Looking Ahead

While the South African blueberry industry appears poised for continued expansion, the path forward involves overcoming hurdles involving market access, import duties, and building demand in emerging regions. The potential opening of Asian markets could be transformative, but it will require perseverance, innovation, and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to fully realize the industry’s vast potential.
