Thermax Expands Footprint in Southern Africa with Major Energy Projects

Johannesburg, South Africa – August 27, 2025

Thermax Limited, a leading Indian engineering company specializing in energy and environment solutions, has significantly bolstered its presence in Southern Africa through substantial contracts in Botswana. These developments underscore the company’s commitment to supporting the region’s energy infrastructure and sustainable growth.

Major Contracts in Botswana

In July 2024, Thermax’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Thermax Babcock & Wilcox Energy Solutions Limited (TBWES), secured an order valued at ₹513 crore (approximately $62 million USD) from Jindal Energy Botswana Pty Ltd. This contract involves the supply of two 550 tonnes per hour Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) boilers for a 600 MW greenfield energy project in Botswana. The project aims to enhance the country’s power supply to the national utility grid, thereby strengthening energy security in Southern Africa. (southernafricantimes.com)

The scope of the contract includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and supply of the CFBC boilers, along with supervision of erection, commissioning, and performance testing. The project is scheduled for completion over a period of 23 months. (cnbctv18.com)

In September 2024, Thermax received a repeat order worth ₹516 crore (approximately $62 million USD) for the second phase of the same 600 MW energy project. This phase involves the supply of an additional two 550 TPH CFBC boilers, further solidifying Thermax’s role as a key partner in Botswana’s energy sector. (businesstoday.in)

Financial Performance and Strategic Initiatives

Thermax’s robust performance is evident in its financial results. In the second quarter of 2024, the company reported a 25% increase in profit, reaching ₹198 crore. This growth was driven by substantial orders in the energy segment, including the significant contracts in Botswana. (financialexpress.com)

Strategically, Thermax is intensifying its commitment to renewable energies and clean technologies. The company has increased its research and development (R&D) investment to approximately 2% of revenue, up from less than 1%. This initiative aims to accelerate the development of sustainable energy solutions, including bio-CNG plants and hybrid renewable energy systems. (newsonprojects.com)

Thermax’s significant investments and successful contract acquisitions in Southern Africa highlight its dedication to enhancing the region’s energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
