Vedanta, Under Anil Agarwal, Delays Demerger Completion to March 2026

Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta Ltd has postponed its demerger deadline to March 31, 2026, due to pending approvals from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and other government entities, as stated in a regulatory filing.

This follows a previous extension, which moved the deadline from March 31, 2025 to September 30 of this year.

“As the necessary approvals from the NCLT, Mumbai Bench, and relevant government bodies are still being finalized, the board has decided to extend the timeline from September 30, 2025, to March 31, 2026,” the company reported.

What is Causing Delays in the Demerger Process?

Securing approval for the demerger plan is critical for separating various business verticals into distinct entities.

Deshnee Naidoo, CEO of Vedanta Resources, previously expressed confidence in completing the demerger of its Indian segment within the current financial year, emphasizing her focus on restructuring efforts.

Last month, the NCLT postponed its hearing on Vedanta’s demerger proposal to October 8, following objections from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas regarding insufficient disclosures in the scheme.

Revised Demerger Plan with a Focus on Core Business

The mining company has revised its demerger strategy, opting to keep its base metals operations under the parent company.

Initially, Vedanta planned to restructure its businesses into six standalone entities, including Vedanta Aluminium and Vedanta Oil & Gas. However, the plan has since undergone revisions.

Vedanta Ltd, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Ltd, ranks among the leading global firms in natural resources and critical minerals. Its operations span multiple countries, including India, South Africa, and Japan, engaging in sectors such as oil and gas, zinc, and aluminum.
