Vodacom’s Performance in Africa: Third Quarter Insights
The recent third quarter results for 2019 from the Vodafone Group have illustrated a robust performance for Vodacom in Africa. The group is actively working to streamline its operations into two distinct regions: Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
Service Growth Overview
Overall, the figures indicate positive organic service growth. Notable developments outside of Vodafone’s European markets include improving trends in South Africa, alongside strong growth in Vodacom’s international branches. Vodacom services are currently available in Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Lesotho, and Kenya.
In South Africa, service revenue has seen a 4.6 percent rise. This growth has occurred despite a challenging economic environment, aided by proactive measures to enhance data pricing and competitiveness. These strategies appear effective, as data traffic continues to surge.
International Operations Performance
Vodacom’s international operations outside South Africa have recorded a commendable 7.4 percent growth. While the DRC and Mozambique showed vigorous growth, Tanzania experienced a slowdown attributed to rising competition. Beginning January 2020, Vodacom is set to bar services to 1.7 million unregistered users in Tanzania but is optimistic about regaining most of these customers in the upcoming quarters.
Developments in Egypt and Regional Simplification
Growth in Egypt’s service revenue has also been noted. As Nick Read, CEO of Vodafone Group, stated, the proposed sale of Vodafone’s stake in Egypt aligns with the group’s strategy to simplify its structure into two major regional entities: Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. In line with this simplification, Vodafone has announced plans to transfer control of its Ghana operations to Vodacom by April.
Concerns on the Horizon
A potential concern for the future is the status of the Vodacom Idea joint venture, which is awaiting decisions from India’s Supreme Court. The outcome here could significantly impact Vodacom’s strategic positioning.
