Celebrating Strong Female Leaders at SEIFSA’S Women of Steel Conference

Johannesburg, August 2025, the women featured at the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) Women of Steel Conference on August 21 exemplify qualities akin to steel: strength, durability, and adaptability.

Welcoming Remarks and Conference Theme

Facilitator Honey Mamabolo opened the event at Komatsu Africa Holdings Training Centre in Germiston. She emphasized that the conference’s theme, Ignite. Forge. Lead, serves as a collective call to action. “We need to move from forging ahead to forging together,” she stated.

Themes such as education, perseverance, authenticity, empathy, and giving back emerged throughout the discussions, reinforcing the importance of collaboration.

Empowerment Through Education

Pam du Plessis, Managing Director of Invincible Valves, was the first to share her insights. She spoke about overcoming fears when she took charge of her company, emphasizing the importance of education and emotional intelligence. “I went out and educated myself—that set me apart,” she shared, explaining her newfound skills in valve assembly.

Combining Roles and Lifelong Learning

Homera Kadwa, Director at Thuthukisa Advisory & Consulting, highlighted her multifaceted identity and the critical role of education. She urged attendees to view learning as a lifelong journey, advising them to “remain teachable and coachable” for real growth.

The Impact of Higher Education

Jessica Hutchings, head of prevention at Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA), discussed how her PhD enabled her to gain respect within her field. “The title of doctor shifted perceptions and opened doors for me,” she noted.

Shifting Perspectives in a Male-Dominated Industry

In a unique touch, Mamabolo introduced Sylvester Makamu, Group Human Capital Director at ACTOM, as the only male speaker. He acknowledged the intimidating nature of being the sole man on the panel, framing it as a window into the experience of women in male-dominated fields.

Makamu described himself as “an ally for women in the industry,” honoring his late mother, who raised five children as a single parent. His goal in participating was to empower others through labor law education.

Gaining Confidence and Leading with Humility

Colleen Commons, Managing Director of BSI Steel, shared her approach to professional growth. “Faking it until you make it works, but truly understanding your industry builds lasting confidence,” she stated. Listening was another key element she highlighted, urging participants to value others’ insights.

Natalie Van Vreden, CEO of the Plastic Convertors Association of South Africa (PCASA), resonated with the struggle of being the only woman in an executive role. Despite facing challenges following her appointment, she showcased resilient leadership, stating, “You are never too important to make a difference.”

The Steel Sisters and Brother offered valuable insights from their journeys, providing practical advice on how Women in Steel can establish their presence in the metals and engineering sector.

Giving Back to the Community

Entry to the Women of Steel Conference was complimentary, with attendees encouraged to donate sanitary products for young girls. This collection supports a cause aimed at eliminating period poverty in South Africa. SEIFSA proudly reported that over 327 sanitary packs were gathered, thanks to the generosity of participants.
